Type of Hajj Details

“And proclaim the pilgrimage to the people. They will come to you on foot and on every lean camel; they shall come from every deep ravine”. (Hajj: 27)

The fifth pillar of Islam is to perform a pilgrimage (Hajj) to Makkah, in Saudi Arabia, at least once in a lifetime. This pillar is obligatory for every Muslim, male or female, subject to that he or she is physically and financially able to do so.

Abu Hurairah (RA) said: “I heard the Prophet (PBUH) say: ‘Whoever performs Hajj for the sake of Allah and does not have sexual relations (with his wife), commit sin, or dispute unjustly (during the Hajj), will come back like the day his mother gave birth to him.’” (Bukhari: 1521, Muslim: 1350).

Hajj is considered as the ultimate form of worship, as it involves the spirit of all the other rituals and demands of the believer. On this blessed occasion, up to 3 million Muslims from all over the globe gather at one blessed place asking the forgiveness from Allah (SWT). ALL pilgrims wear special clothes (Ihram) two unsown white sheets, which strips away all distinctions of wealth, status, class and culture; all standing together and equal for the sake Allah (SWT).

The rites of Hajj, which go back to the time of Prophet Ibrahim (PBUH) who built the Kaaba, are observed over five or six days, beginning on the eighth day of the last month (of the Islamic Calendar) of the year, named Dhu al-Hijjah.

These rites include circumambulating the Kaaba (Tawaf) and walking or lightly jogging back and forth between the hills of Safa and Marwa seven times (Sa'i), as Hajar (Prophet Ibrahim’s wife) did during her seek for water for her son Ismail. Then the pilgrims stand together on the wide plain of Arafah and join in prayers for God's forgiveness. The pilgrims also cast stones at a stone pillar which represents Satan. The Hajj ends with a festival, called Eid Al-Adha, which is celebrated with prayers, the sacrifice of an animal, and the exchange of greetings and gifts in Muslim communities around the globe.
